The Secondary Schools Water Polo Nationals took place in Auckland in the second week of the first school holidays. Our Premier Girls team worked exceptionally hard in preparation for all of our tournaments this season, especially the Nationals. We have an incredible coach, Caity Da Silva who was unbelievably supportive and encouraging of all 12 of us. She showed us how hard we have to work in order to take down the champions, Diocesan. Our team fell short of a gold medal three times this season, coming up against Diocesan in all three finals, where they would pull away significantly in the last two quarters. The team placed second in Auckland, second in North Island and 2ndsecond at the Nationals. However, this has made us become more tenacious and next season we hope to pull away with the gold and the title “champions”.

Rangitoto College’s Senior Water Polo season runs through Term 1, including the Auckland League, North Islands and Nationals. This year was a very strong season for us with 13 talented players led by coaches Iosefa Tuiasau and Nemanja Radic. In the Auckland league, we dethroned Sacred Heart who have been champions consecutively for the last nine years. This was the first year we have won this since 2008. Our boys fought hard in the North Islands but we came away with a devastating loss in the final against Hamilton Boys after taking them to penalties. We came up against Hamilton again in the final at Nationals but couldn’t pull away with the win. Our Premier Water Polo team came first in Auckland, second in North Islands and second in Nationals.
