Special Olympics Athletics

The Special Olympics Atheletics is an event where our students get the opportunity to compete and develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy. Held last month at the AUT Millenium, our enthused and energetic Rangitoto College students had an excellent day in the sun participating in a variety of both track and field events with around 120 competitors from the North Shore colleges.

Highlights of the day included excellent performances from newcomers Jane and Leo, in shot put and javelin, as well as William who won the senior shot put. The students were successful in the track events, culminating in the senior relay team placing first with a 50 m lead.

A special thanks to the 16 students from the Rangitoto Service Committee who not only helped run the event but also cheered on all the athletes, creating a really wonderful atmosphere.

The athletes lived up to the oath of Special Olympics: Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
